The Shilohs formed in September 2008, a result of Johnny Payne and Mike Komaszczuk’s bonding over the love of the same bands like Big Star, Flying Burrito Brothers, Beatles, Everly Brothers, etc. Both Johnny and Mike had songs to perform in a band and needed a good outlet with like-minded individuals. So Dan Colussi and Ben Frey were asked to take part, as both had played with Johnny in the past in some serious stoner blues jams. Dan and Johnny also played in The Anenomes together with Jason Grimmer before he moved to Montreal. With everyone in check, The Shilohs wrote many songs before performing with bands like Cold War Kids and Destroyer.
After going public with their vintage sound straight out of the late 60s/early 70s, The Shilohs shacked up with Hot Hot Heat front-man Steve Bays to record songs for their soon to be released EP. Bays’ studio, Tugboat Place Studios, is located on the upteenth floor of the Dominion Building in downtown Vancouver. The haunted building helped in creating a unique experience in recording the EP. Because the studio’s located in essentially an office building, the band could only track in the middle of the night, to avoid having the sounds of footsteps in the building and the hum of the electric busses that would go past in the street. And in the end, they produced a fine set of songs ranging from big pop hits to slow, hazy ballads.
The band is releasing the EP themselves this July 2010 and are about to go back into the studio again in August to record their follow-up full length album. This time around they’ll be working with producers JCDC(John Collins, David Carswell), who’re best known for their work with Destroyer, The New Pornographers, and Tegan & Sara. Aside from recording The Shilohs plan to spread their name further than the Lower Mainland by going out on tour.
